Jimoto no Gaijin

Who am I? Since 1985,a resident of Ajigasawa, a small town on the west coast of Honshu, Japan- yes, way up there near the top, in Aomori Prefecture. Problem? I've got the wrong face (Canadian Celt). People still give a start when they round the supermarket aisle and see me. So, who am I? Jimoto no Gaijin- the local foreigner.

Yep, Still Here- the Procrastinator

No post since June!
Camps and vacation are to blame- not me, of course!
I returned from vacation a few days before my wife and daughters in order to tackle a big problem: the foundation of our house rotted away in the 10 years since we built it.
Ten years?!
Actually, the rot was all in the area of the bathroom and kitchen. There has been a slow leak under the kitchen sink for a LONG time. "Got to take care of that someday" is one response- the one I am prone to (ask my wife). And, it's a good way to insure future problems. As for the bath, I was worried about it from the start. It was done in an unorthodox (and CHEAP) way. And, I watched leaks around the base of the house with interest and said "Got to take care of that someday."
Sometimes "someday" really comes. After a week of cutting, prying and pounding on damaged house framing, I have replaced or shored up the weakened spots. Next week I have to gut the bath in preparation for a crew to install an orthodox (and somewhat expensive) prefab unit that will keep the water where it belongs.
I was dreading this repair job all summer, but it has turned out not so badly. There is another "foundation" problem that has been on my mind as well. Our mother church in the city of Goshogawara is in dire straights. Too many in the congregation have been looking at long-standing interpersonal problems between members and saying "Got to take care of that someday". The rot is deep, widespread, and devastating, and I can't fix it without some serious cutting, prying and pounding- and that doesn't come easy for me when it involves people instead of 2x4s.
Both of these problems would have been a lot easier to handle a few years ago. Please pray for me as I belatedly tackle the rot.
