Jimoto no Gaijin

Who am I? Since 1985,a resident of Ajigasawa, a small town on the west coast of Honshu, Japan- yes, way up there near the top, in Aomori Prefecture. Problem? I've got the wrong face (Canadian Celt). People still give a start when they round the supermarket aisle and see me. So, who am I? Jimoto no Gaijin- the local foreigner.

Invasion

What's this? An incarcerated UFO? No, it's a solar powered monkey-proof fence.

And this is the entrance gate.
Gardeners in Luke and Yuko's village, Kazamaura, need this kind of protection to prevent simian invasions which would leave them with a few chewed odds and ends of vegetables to show for a season's work.
It's 200 kilometers (120 miles) to Kazamaura from here, and our monkey problem is not quite so severe.

At least, it wasn't until this year. Perhaps the mild winter has upset their usual feeding patterns, but our local troop of snow monkeys, which usually shows up at the edge of the woods once or twice a season, has taken to hanging out on the neighbour's roof! Looking in our bedroom window is definitely an invasion (of privacy). I hope they don't decide to come in and check the fridge.
